FOR sOLICITORS & aCCOUNTANTS

When to bring in a valuer —
you keep the client.

THE SIGNAL, IN ONE LINE

If the number is contested, going to a court or to HMRC, or real money turns on it — refer it.

REFER WHEN…

For solicitors

Divorce and financial remedy · shareholder disputes and unfair prejudice petitions · buy-outs under a shareholders’ or partnership agreement · estates that hold a business · litigation or expert determination needing an expert report · a valuation served by the other side that needs testing.

For accountants

A client selling or buying a business · a shareholder buy-out, share issue or incentive scheme · a tax event such as probate and IHT, CGT or a restructuring · succession or estate planning · anything where a generalist estimate would be challenged and you would rather not be the one defending it.

For corporate finance & sell-side advisers

A client who has had an unsolicited approach · an owner who needs a defensible figure to set expectations before going to market · a deal where a strategic buyer’s opening offer has to be tested. You advise on the deal; I sign the independent number it is measured against — a complement to your indicative work, never a substitute, and never contingent on the outcome.

WHY REFER TO BVPRO
01

Defensible & independent

IVS-aligned, signed, built to withstand challenge. Structured to the applicable expert-evidence rules where it is to be filed.

02

Safe to rely on

The number holds up even when your client wants a particular answer. That is the point of instructing someone independent.

03

The relationship stays yours

I value the business or review the report; I do not take your client. I work alongside you and report to you.

04

Fixed fee, agreed first

Scoped in writing, normally within 48 hours, never contingent on the outcome. Referred work is never discounted — responsiveness is the benefit.

What I do not do

Property, plant and machinery, pensions and intellectual property are separate valuation disciplines, with their own qualifications, their own standards and, in some cases, their own regulator. I do not value them. I also do not hold a referral arrangement with anyone who does, which means that when I tell you a matter needs a different specialist, that is a technical opinion and not a commercial one.
Where a matter has a business valuation component alongside another asset class, I value the business and say so plainly in the report, with the boundary of my instruction stated on the face of it.

REFER A MATTER

Send a referral in under a minute

Four questions are required. The rest help me quote faster, if you have them to hand.

I’ll reply by email, so you have a record. Add a number if a WhatsApp message suits you too.
The company and the parties on both sides. I check these against current and past instructions before I read anything else. The names are used for the conflict check and for nothing else.

An outline is enough at this stage. Please do not send privileged or confidential case detail through this form. Once the conflict check is clear I will confirm a secure route for documents. BVPro uses the details you provide to respond to your enquiry and to run a conflict check. Names given for the conflict check are used for that purpose and nothing else, are held separately, and are not used for marketing or shared with any third party. Enquiries that do not proceed to an instruction are deleted after twelve months. See the Privacy Policy for how your data is handled, how long it is kept, and your rights under UK GDPR.

Not sure if it needs a valuer?

Email me the papers, or ask — a two-minute call usually settles it.
